Opposing Homosexuality isn't Extremism
Religions in the world fall into two categories, divine religions and man-developed religions. Divine religions, i.e. Islam, Christianity and Judaism, are based on the fact that while humanity gradually accumulates knowledge about the universe, the Creator already has the complete and infinite knowledge that is beyond our limited senses and intellectual capacity. Therefore, divine religions are based on the belief that the Creator sent messengers to humanity to guide them to the straight path and inform them about 'the unseen'. To the Will of the Creator, the Great, humanity must submit.
Although it is true that human beings are programmed to ask questions that can be answered exclusively by religion, it is inaccurate to describe a divine religion as a mere 'philosophy' that achieves spiritual happiness through satisfying a psychological need.
'Truth' is one of the key concepts of divine religions. The truth in all divine religions is basically the same. All divine religions share the belief that God is the Creator of the World and hence is the only one worthy of worship and unconditional obedience, that people will be judged in the Last Day, after resurrection, that murder, adultery and fornication are forbidden. The laws prescribed by the All-Wise and All-Knowledgeable God in the Holy Books pave the way for humankind to prosper in this life and in the hereafter. God says in the Quran "Verily, We did send down the Taurât (Torah) [to Mûsâ (Moses)], therein was guidance and light, by which the Prophets, who submitted themselves to Allâh’s Will, judged for the Jews. And the rabbis and the priests [too judged for the Jews by the Taurât (Torah) after those Prophets], for to them was entrusted the protection of Allâh’s Book, and they were witnesses thereto. Therefore fear not men but fear Me (O Jews) and sell not My Verses for a miserable price. And whosoever does not judge by what Allâh has revealed, such are the Kâfirûn (i.e. disbelievers - of a lesser degree as they do not act on Allâh’s Laws)."
An integral part of all divine religions is to enjoin good and forbid evil. Religious people carry the responsibility to warn humankind of the grave consequences awaiting them, both in this life and hereafter, if guidance of the Lord is ignored.
All divine religions forbid homosexual behavior and consider it a horrible sin. Believers who care about their society have to warn them. The town of Lot, peace be upon him, deserved fierce destruction when they ignored the warning. I'm sorry to say that there is no other way to interpret the holy books regarding homosexuality.
As homosexuality is no more than a psychological disease, believers should be fighting the disease itself rather than their ill brothers. Believers love their brothers in humanity and hate the disease of homosexuality. To protest homosexuality is NOT a message of hate, but rather a message of love. I don't think that using words like 'extremism' will frighten believers or stop them from carrying their responsibility towards humanity.
