The 3rd Annual Islam Awareness Week
In the name of God, the Beneficient the Merciful
Islam Awareness Week Program |
The evenings of the week Apr. 16-20 at UConn are going to be different (God willing). Every day of that week UConn will have a unique Islamic event. Two years ago, the Muslim Student Association at UConn started the tradition of "Islam Awareness Week", to share the beautiful truth of Islam with everyone on Campus.
The Islam Awareness Week kicks off on Monday, Apr. 16th at 6:30pm, with the "Islam Explained" lecture at the Dodd Cener, followed by a Q&A session. Sh. Yasir Qadhi is one of the few Americans who combined a traditional seminary training with Western education. After earning his BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, Sh. Yasir Qadhi earned anothe Bachelor degree for the Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia, specializing in Hadith (the oral tradition of Prophet Muhammad PBUH). Sh. Yasir now is completing a Ph.D. degree in Islamic studies at Yale.
On Tuesday at 6:30pm, Br. Abu-Yusuf and Br. Ammar Adam will engage you in a quest for "the Purpose of YOUR Life". Br. Ammar Adam is a veteran and former president of UConn MSA. After graduating with a degree in Marketing, he is now pursuing a degree in Islamic studies with Al-Maghrib Institute. Br. Abu-Yusuf, with his scholarly background and energetic speaking skills, is one of UConn MSA's favorite speakers. This will be the third time he will be driving from NY City to speak at UConn.
On Wednesday at 6:30pm, the Women Center of UConn will be hosting our "Women in Islam" event at their new location at the Student Union. Sr. Mubarakah Ibrahim, the current president of the New England Muslim Sister Association, will share with UConn students her knowledge and experience as an American Muslim woman. Sr. Mubarakah is currently studying for a bachelor degree in Islamic studies from American Open University. She is both a published freelance writer and poet. She has been recently hosted on "The Oprah Winfrey Show".
On Thursday at 6:30pm, the MSA will hold a forum about "Muslims in America: Problems, Power and Prospects". The keynote speaker, Dr. James E. Jones, is an Associate Professor of World Religions and African Studies, and Chair of World Religions at Manhattenville College, Purchase NY. A panel of UConn Muslim students will be sharing their experiences as American Muslims and Muslims on Campus.
On Friday at 1:15PM, Jumu'a (the Muslims' weekly congregational prayer) will be held at the Islamic Center of UConn. Followed by a luncheon of delicious spicy South Asian Halaal food, at 2:00PM. The luncheon is only $3 per person, and for each IAW event you attend you get a FREE ticket to the luncheon. You can use extra tickets you earn to invite your friends!
